The municipality has 17.736 inhabitants, its surface measures 1.494 hectares and its population density counts 1.187 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises on a flat area along the coast, 20 metres above the sea-level.

The economy of the town is linked to fishing and farming. The main cultivations are: vegetables, cereals, olives, forages, grapes and fruit.

The name Pozzallo probably derives from an old well in the area, called Puzzaddu in Sicilian dialect. From the end of the 14th century it belonged to the Count of Modica Bernardo Cabrera, who built the wonderful tower (named after him) to defend the town from the frequent incursions of the pirates.

The village started developing in the 19th century next to the tower, and became municipality in 1829. On June 3, 1860 some Garibaldian volunteers, the so-called "Lighthouse hunters", landed here to meet the Thousand.

For its beach the town is considered a holiday resort, and  has also very interesting monuments, such as palace Musso in art-nuveau style (beginning of the 20th century) and the Tower (14th century).

Amongst the famous personalities we mention the politician and jurist Giorgio La Pira, who was Florence's mayor for a long time and was received by Stalin in Moscow in 1951, as well as the world-wide renown sculptor Enzo Assenza.
